Just Because You're a Non-American Doesn't Mean You Have To Settle For Less As a Freelance Writer

I get tons of questions from non-US writers struggling to find freelance writing sites that pay and pay well. Many non-citizens have excellent writing skills. But what it boils down to is tax difficulties and the hoops these sites must jump through to pay freelance writers in different countries. However, there are some excellent freelance writing sites available to those living outside the States. I am currently working on a more comprehensive E-Book that will cover this topic, and many others, that I am going to provide free to my subscribers. Until then, I’m going to toss this quick list up to help ya’ll get the ball rolling.

1.       Bukisa – If you were to compare this freelance writing site to another, it would be comparable to eHow and their compensation methods. Freelance writers will make money through page views on their how-to articles. Bukisa’s FAQ says this about their payment index: "It’s updated at least once per month based upon the overall performance of our websites revenue streams - this involves the following: contextual advertising, banner advertising, e-mail marketing, joint ventures and more." Bukisa also offers an affiliate program that increases revenue with each referral.

2.       About.com – Their acceptance process is rigorous. A potential freelance writer for About must complete a preparation program and then create a sample guide site. However, the payoff can be huge. Some writers make up to $700 per month with increases after the first year.

3.       Triond – This site also uses ad revenue sharing. They give the freelance writer 50% of the income from their content. They claim to reach a large audience by representing your articles on numerous sites. One neat thing about this site is that it allows users to post pictures and video. So, if you’re a multi-talented, non-US or US citizen, you can easily earn from all your skills.

4.       Helium – I don’t know much about Helium, but from my brief research it looks very promising. I am going to provide a link to their comprehensive FAQ so that you can see for yourself.

These are just a few of the freelance writing sites for non-Americans I have found. The E-Book I am working on will have a lot more in-depth information along with tons of other tips for getting started and making money as a freelance writer. So, be sure to subscribe to this blog. All subscribers will get the E-Book free for signing up. Also, check out my new Resources & E-Books page for freelance writing guides that have helped me tremendously.

Hi - I'm an Australian and I write occasionally for Constant Content. A lot of non-Americans do too (they're based in Vancouver, Canada - so no US tax issues). The money is better than Textbroker, Elance and just about all the others. No bidding, either. Definitely worth a look for new writers looking to getting started with online articles.
There's a great ebook out on writing for them too: The Freelance Writer's Guide to Making Money on Constant-Content.com

Awesome! That'll help a lot of folks, I'm sure.

Thank you for this article, I used to write for Helium so I will probably apply there as they considered me to be one of their better writers. The advice on Constant Content above was helpful too as I am currently going through the acceptance process there with providing a writing sample. I am also in Australia too and the amount of sites that will not take non US writers is frustrating as I just do not understand why they would have an issue with taxes, when it is my responsibility to file my own tax return here in Australia as an independent contractor. Anyway thanks again for this information.

Oh by the way, I did hear something about Triond shutting down, although that could be a rumor, you may want to look into that.

Best regards and happy writing, Janelle

Hi Janelle,
Sorry for the extremely late reply. As you can probably tell, I have been neglecting this blog for the last few months, not because I am giving up on it but simply due to an increase in work related projects and personal obligations. I have been doing research for the e-book that I spoke about in the post and discovered a nice little site a few months back. I wrote a review about it that can be read here. The short and sweet about that site is this: It's best used as a way to find leads to freelance writing employers that typically hire based on ability not your country of residence. The WriterTown site also allows you to submit guest posts or syndicate articles from a blog or personal site and include links and an author bio. Writer Town is a good tool for everyone especially non-natives looking for more opportunities in the freelance writing industry. Good luck to you!
